Anyone here ever use MM4 or the MM4 Emulator in PC-DMIS? I'm getting ready to upgrade to PC-DMIS (from MM4) and was wondering if my knowledge of MM4 will be of any help.
Thanks

I was an MM4 user (AVAIL before that) and the transition was not that hard. The main thing was vectors - retract instead of approach.
Get your company to send you for training. You could probably pick up PC-DMIS by working with it, but starting with training is a much shorter learning time.

Yeah!! what Don said. I also was a long time user of avail and than MM4. You have the basic CMM concepts so that is a big plus. You may miss some of the feature of MM4 but after you PcDmis awhile you will never look back. Yes, if you can get the class it will jump start the use of it. Good Luck.
Ditto of all the previous posts, though I've had no training. A little tougher to learn this way but you can do it. Watch what it does though, when you "hard code" stuff in MM4 it does what it's told right or wrong. The demon thinks on it's own and will change the code. Example, I constructed a plane to align to from 4 pierce pts, the demon came up with a -z vector, I changed the code to +z vector and let it update the code below, all was good. When I ran the code it changed it back to -z vector and aligned to it, you can imagine what that did to the stuff after that. Fix was to create a reverse plane right after the constructed one and align to that one, results were correct and it sticks run after run.
I'll have to second & third the past comments concerning the transition to PC-DMIS...
CMM Software Experience:
Avail - 1 Year
MMIV - 7 years
PC-DMIS - 2 years
I'll have to second & third the past comments concerning the transition to PC-DMIS. If you've got the CMM basics, that is a BIG + in the amount of time it will take to comprehend the new software.
I do recommend that you do not purchase the emulator for MMIV though. Don't waist your company's money on it. We purchased it because we were afraid of losing the seven years worth of MMIV programs we had on file. I think we may have used it for about two weeks before we decided it was time to create all new programs in PC-DMIS.
Good Luck on your adventure...

Thanks for your help guys and you can bet you'll be hearing from me a lot in the near future. New software is on it's way and I'll be jumping right in. Glad to know this place is here for help.

Having hundreds of MM4 programs, we also considered the MM4 module for pc-dmis. The pricetag was a huge obsticle to this. We run MM4 and Pc-Dmis on two of our Xcels using an A-B switch on each to flip between the two computers (Unix for MM4, Windows for pc-dmis). Instead of reprogramming all of the MM4 progs in pc-dmis, we just continue running them in MM4, with all new work in pc-dmis.
