  • PCDMIS 4 runs very slowly

I'm running PCDMIS on the Brown & Sharpe computer/CMM package that was purchaced just under a year ago. The computer is a 2.8GHz with 500megs of ram (onboard video probably) and has nothing other than PCDMIS, Windows and a virus scanner installed on it.

3.7 runs just fine. When I try to run 4.0, everything is very slow. If I press F9 to edit something, it takes 15 seconds to bring up the edit window. In 3.7, this happens instantly.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what may be causing 4.0 to run so slowly?

May be your on board video. It takes a very good video card to run PCMDIS, more so the newer the version of software you are using

Good point. ON Wilcox's website, they say NVIDIA cards are no longer supported in 4.0.

I was just at a seminar about the new version and they have a readme file that specifies the new requirements for PC's. Might be worth a look as I believe many who have older systems will run into some trouble

It's more likely the (lack of) memory, the NVIDIA video cards support is as good in V40 as V37.

nkay, the Wilcox site has been CHANGED (at least I think so). I think it used to say that the "Nvidia GeForce video cards" are not supported, now it says "Nvidia GeForce video cards are not recommended".

Yes, the original statement led to a lot of support calls so it was toned down.

The crux is that NVIDIA feel that people using PC-DMIS should not use their GeForce card, which is designed as a gaming card, but should instead use one of their higher end cards. Nothing has been changed in PC-DMIS to make V40 NOT support GeForce, it's just probably not as optimal as their higher end (for that read more expensive) cards. However, the same would be true of all other versions of PC-DMIS.

When in doubt, post code. A second set of eyes might see something you missed.

This still does not explain Erikir's problem

Tell us nkay, why the big difference between versions on the same card? The card is not the variable here. I guess I'd want to know if Erikir has installed both versions side by side and if it is happening with both versions since the install (would be memory as you said) or if the problem only exists on 4 even with both versions installed. How about it Erikir? Is Wilcox pumping sunshine up our a** on this or what?

V40 is a bigger footprinted application (there's a lot of new code in there). With 500MB memory, depending on the OS (Windows XP?) then that doesn't leave much for PC-DMIS. It's possible on this PC that the extra memory pcdmis needs is forcing Windows to need to use virtual memory (i.e. disk) to be able to run pc-dmis. If parts of pc-dmis is in virtual memory, then there will be significant performance drop as it has to keep on loading and saving different bits of pcdmis. I've seen this before on similar spec PCs when jumping from V37 to V40.
