  • Chamfer Inspection Interpretation

    To All: We would like to have your input on an issue of debate we are having in our Inspection Department. We are trying to figure out the right way to measure a chamfer callout. Normally when a chamfer is called out Like this .02 - .03 x 45° we would measure it from one edge across to the other intersection of the angled surface. But now the 45° is BASIC. Here is the Question Do we measure it now relative to the 45° angle or the regular way? See the Attached chicken scratch......

    I would say that A is the correct way.

      I say the angle itself needs to be drawn with extension lines. Preferably the 0.045-0.055 would be as well. Without the extension lines I'd go with A but that would be an assumption based on what I believe is practical. I say the 45º basic as called out is bogus and you need clarification from whomever the drawing came from.

        I would check it to A....thats how it is called out on your sketch. Why the angle is basic is who knows.....

          I'd suggest going to your engineer or whoever drew the 45° as basic and ask why his head is not on his shoulders and is currently somewhere else....

          No profile FCF, get rid of the basic angle.

          Chamfers should be measured as in example A unless specified otherwise on the drawing.

            Without a profile tolerance, or a "blanket" -all basic dims profile x.xx a|b|c| I'd say it should be an untoleranced dim...

              I agree that the 45 degree is bogus. It is a bad drawing. Measure it the regular way.

                Just to be different, I going with method C.

                That is how it is interpreted here be it right or wrong. In this case it does not matter as it is a 45º. At 30º it would matter a bit more.

                  That is why I say extension lines with a dimension would clear this up. Prehaps a boot to the head of the mouthbreather that drew that would help as well. You can tell him I said that if you want.
