Straightness

Can anyone confirm the following?
I have probed several diameters, normal to X workplane, along an obviously bowed rod.
If I construct a line and dimension straightness while in the Z workplane I get results which appear to reflect the deviations in the Y direction.
If I construct and dimension in the Y workplane I get results reflecting the deviations in the Z plane.
Similar to the 2D line angle construction and results.

That seems to make sense.
It would be more clear with a sketch or dwg.
