      Size doesn't matter.

I wouldn't probe a large diameter with it though.

Wow, so you're gonna have only a .15mm clearance. Hope you bought a backup!

I have a part I use a .3 probe on. I've broken them putting em on.

I have mine at 1%. I think the biggest problem you would have is if there is a manual point staight down and someone hits too hard. I've had inspectors say it just fell off. But suspect abuse when taking manual points and not the program. I usually slow it down if I don't have much clearance just to make sure and speed up where I can but leave it at 1%.

I do this every week. I have a groove that is .03" and use a .5 (.02"), .005" per side clearance. I usually run my programs at 75% machine speed and 100% on the jog box w/ 1.5 touchspeed. With the .5 probe I use 25% machine speed and 50% on the jog box w/ 1.0 touchspeed. I ran a lot of test to see what kind of accuracy I was getting and this was what I ended up w/. It is well w/in .0001" of accuracy on my parts. I can measure them manually w/ an indicator, just takes a lot of time so I use the machine to save time.

You won't be breaking them in touch. You will be breaking them in move. Turn your move speeds down whenever you are close to any surface. I use 20% move speed when anywhere near the part with .5mm stylus. You will be fine until you rotate the head in the wrong place or hit the part during a move operation. A 2% measure speed will not break the stylus. Ever.

Same we use 0.5 probes a fair bit , usually rapid to and from tool changer at high move speed 80/100 % but drop move speed to 20% and touch speed 1% whilst probing. Havent broke one yet touch wood.. 2c
