    question I have is...

when migrating a program from an earlier version to a newer version, say 3.7mr3 to 4.2

    is it best to
    1) use windows to copy the program and then rename it
    or
    2) open the program in the older version and then save it with a new name and thenopen in the new version
    or
    3) open the program in the newer version and immediately save it with a new name

if using #3 , would this leave the "original" program alone without any issues created when using it in the older version of pcdmis

    makes me go hhmmm

any thoughts and or experience with this?

    Use Caution...

Hello Bob, it's Ben Sasser. Thought I could help.

    1) Recommend you back-up all your program, cad, probe, and alignment
    files to a permanent CD(s).

    2) Copy the contents of the CD(s) to new directory on the hard-drive
of the computer you will be using PC-DMIS with.

    3) Put CD in a safe place.

    4) Open PC-DMIS v. 4.2 (or latest version you will be working with).
Use latest version of PC-DMIS to open the programs one at a time
from the new directory you created from step #2.

    5) Save the newly opened program as the latest version of PC-DMIS you
are working with and indicate version in the name so you can
identify it in the future or in case you get interrupted and have
to take a break while doing this task.
    (e.g. PC-DMIS_Demoblock_v4-2.prg)

    Hope this helps.

In other words, Ben is recomending backing up and then using option 1.

I would backup and then use option 1 or option 2. Option 3 seems a little risky to me and even though it may not change the original (I bet it does) I wouldn't chance it.

Thanks for the replies Ben and Goodluck. I had a feeling that the extra steps are the more prudent way to do this.

Ben its nice to see you on the board now, will we see you posting more in the future? Say hi to all down your way for me.

I hear Eric may be up this way sometime soon.
