    Hi, is there a way to force the machine to always enter a hole from the center like it does when 'sample hits' is turned off?

    With 'sample hits' on, it wants to enter from the side and often/sometimes crash into the part because reasons.

    I hate that stupid thing.

    A few things to try...

    1) Try giving yourself more PREHIT and RETRACT.

    2) Make sure you're Z height for the feature and depth are set up correctly and that you're not robbing yourself of movespace accidentally due to messed up settings.

    If still messed up...

    3) Make the feature just to get in your edit window. Switch to COMMAND mode if you don't already use it. Make "SHOW CONTACT PARAMETERS" equal "YES" and then make "SHOW HITS" equal "YES" to expand the code open and you'll see a list of the actual points that make up the autofeature. Outside of the autofeature, create a move/point with coordinates for above the hole. Then, cut & paste that move/point from outside of the autofeature to INSIDE of the autofeature in front of the first hit. PCD is annoying, you'll probably have to close the "show hits option" on the autofeature and then re-open it to see the move/point now successfully displayed in your code as it is shown in mine.

    You could also try a BEFORE avoidance move, but I don't think that will help you. That will get you to feature center BEFORE the CMM takes the sample hits but it won't stop you from clipping the surface of the material.

    Lastly, try the FINDHOLE option. It works in conjunction with your PREHIT & RETRACT & CHECK distances.

        I always use avoidance moves. Seems to work with me. When you use avoidance moves before, make sure you set the distance.

          Make the Feature hole smaller than it actually is and the check distance bigger. For Example 1 inch hole. create it so that it's a .990 or whatever. Make sure your Check Distance is at least .01 to make up the difference. I'll do this with sheet metal, because those holes never seem to be in the right spot. All ideas above are better, just throwing this one in the mix also.

            Another option is to make prehit / retract values 1/2 the hole diameter, it'll drive from the nominal center.

          Thanks for the suggestions, i was hoping for a toggle switch/checkbox
          .
          i'll play around with the suggestions and hope i find something that work with all holes.
          Just really annoying when it happens, when the technology for center penetration exist.
