  • Hole diameter not even close to accurate

    Hello all,

    I'm using an auto feature picked from the cad for an auto circle. Nominal diameter is 10, using 3 sample hits spaced 2 mm out, 4 hits for the feature, depth of .3mm (sheet metal).

    The measurements I'm getting from it are 6.5mm for diameter. I can't figure out why. It's the only hole in this same surface that is causing issue, all the others are measuring fine.

    I checked calibration for this probe angle, got a STDDEV of .001

    I'm not picking up any significant bur in the hole, or at least none visible to cause a 3.5mm outtol.

    I've tried increasing hits, change depth, change spacer, change start/end angle: nothing. Cant get it to budge.

    Recalibrated, nothing changed.

    The weird thing I noticed when I was messing with the start/end angle:

    Instead of measuring 0-360, as I would for every hole (because my probe is almost perfectly perpendicular to the feature's surface), I tried measuring each quadrant. so 0-90, 90-180, 180-270, 270-360 trying to see if maybe I have a severely oblong hole. What was really strange is when I measured 0-90, It would take the 3 sample hits in the correct quadrant, but would measure the 4 feature hits in the 180-270 quadrant, rather than in the 0-90 as it should. Regardless, all the measurements fell in the mid-6mm zone, so it still proved nothing.

    Anyone have some thoughts on this? If you will teach me how to post my code, I will do so.

    As for the size issue, what size probe are you using? Maybe Pcd is confused and is comping like it is an 'outside' instead of an 'inside' circle.

    I should also note, I tried a completely different probe build on a different tp20, and got the same measurement.

          bigblue97mustang, I see that the X deviation is 1.13 and the Y is .247, is that typical? I don't think the size issue is the result of cosine error as it shouldn't have that much error, but you might try changing the Find Hole setting to center. It will take 3 points inside the circle and roughly center the probe before checking the hole.

          I think I tried a find center as well, but can't say for absolute certainty. And these are pre-trial parts, so a 1mm deviation from center is somewhat normal. Especially since all the features around that circle are deviated in the same direction.

          They still have plenty of jig tuning let to do! HAHA

          Thats the wrong circle. That was a circle used in my alignment. The circle in question is further down.

        May be stupid but...... copy " another " hole that " worked " , change the nom's to the same location as your " troublesome " hole and run.... You get the same measurement ? Sometimes features are just corrupt....

          I'm going to absolutely hate it if that works. At this point I was trying to prepare as strong of a case as I could that my CAD was causing the issue. I won't have enough time to try it out today, but I'll give it a shot first thing in the morning.

        Change the name 8-1-3 to 8_1_3.

        Probably not this, but this is the kind of weird **** stuff which can happen using math symbols in feature names.

        The only thing that should be in a feature name is letters, numbers, and the underscore. Nothing else.

        Also, you're using a 2mm probe, and measuring a hole 4mm undersize. That is what you would expect if it is calculating in outie from an innie. Obviously it runs through the feature, so it is measuring properly.

        What about the stupid "Void Detection" toggle (under the End Angle)? Is that toggled off?

        You might get away with special characters, but you are playing with fire. PCDMIS is like a hibernating bear. Don’t disturb it, because it can become ornery and will bite you in the buttocks.

        Looks correct to me, Let's see 8 - 1 - 3 = 4 , then take the 4 off of THEO 10, so 10 - 4 = 6, The result is 6.138, that's pretty darn close if you ask me. Looks Good!!!!

          Not really, DMIS is set up for you to math scripting inside the Editor, So when you use minus, times, addition, etc. Well when you start marking it up that way, Don't be surprised when it does.

        And post that section of code.

        Maybe there is something there that is messing with the measurements. Bad hits, bad vectors.

          Did you try dimensioning the diameter again? I mean inserting a new dimension statement. Sometimes PCDMIS just gets stuck and corrupts a line a code. Inserting a new line sometimes works.

          It will turn your hair gray and sour your personality if you’re not careful. Good luck.
