  • 2020 R2 Profile issue. What's going on here?

    I have an MBD part I'm converting to R2 (removing legacy profile and adding GeoTol). I have a profile that is .010 to no datums (form profile) that I'm having issues with. The surface in question is the surface that the datum B target points are on but the datum B points are not being profiled. When I make the profile, it gives me the error in the code below. The surface is NOT planer so I decided to try constructing a plane and profiling that. The plane works but it is telling me the profile is out while the entire program is at nominal (program executed offline to zero everything out). Anyone have an idea what's going on here?

    I have included the datums and definitions although it shouldn't matter because the profile is to no datums. I also have the plane and scan constructions there too. The dimensions at the bottom, 30A is profiling the plane and 30B is dimensioning the scan. Keep in mind, all feature actuals are nominal, its like the program has never run.

    Edited to add that the surface is NOT planer. Don't know how I missed that. That explains the deviation in DIM 30A. Still have no idea why it isn't liking the scan.

    Just shooting from the hip here... Maybe it errors out because there are no deviations at all in the feature set? Feature set might be interpreted as "freeform" since a set isn't a feature per se?

    If you measure a part, does it still error out?

      Are your THEO and ACTL values supposed to be off from <1, 0, 0> on PLN30? Perhaps the points used for construction don't fall on a plane, nominally speaking? I would check all nominal values.

        JacobCheverie Will do. It's running now so we shall soon see. It's not a big part so it should be done fairly quickly. One thing I'm going to try, out of curiosity, is convert it back to an R1 program to see if I get the same error. The program was originally all legacy profiles and we are changing everything over to GeoTol. I wonder if Xact will give the same error. I don't think it will but I'm going to try anyways.

        JacobCheverie After the initial run, I still have the error. I went back and added 12 more points so I now have 39 points in an area roughly 1.2 x 3.8 inches. Ran the extra points, added it to the scan, re executed the scan... same error. I think I'm going to do a form only legacy profile so I can get the part out and revisit this later today. I am going to now go ahead and convert it back to an R1 program and see what I get. I am guessing Xact won't give me the error.

        I'm not complaining about the error at all, am fairly sure it is something I am doing wrong. I just want to know what it is and how to fix it so I can make changes in my programming style for future parts.

      I haven't measured it yet. I am still updating the program. I will have it on the machine here in a few minutes. I'll report back when I get it ran and I will keep dimension 30A and 30B in there for S&G's.

          A-machine-insp Very odd, I put your points into PC-DMIS and it took the profile just fine. At first, my set wasn't in the correct order and it gave me the same error. I reordered and it was fine. You have some spaces in your CONSTR/SET line (Ex: PNT14 0). Are those artifacts of copying your code onto here?

            neil.challinor I manually created Auto Vector Point features with the same nominal values. When I select the points in order (135, 136, 137, ...) in the feature set I have no problem reporting profile of 0. As soon as I switch the order (..., 157, 158, 160, 159) I receive the error.

          Have you tried reconstructing the set from scratch and recreating the Geometric Tolerance command?

          Just out of interest, were the points picked from the CAD model or were they taught via the jogbox on the machine? Looking at the co-ordinates and vectors makes me think they were taught via the jogbox which might be the problem. If the nominal X,Y,Z,I,J,K are not correct then that would account for the error message and also explain the deviation on your constructed plane.

          I think there is something wrong with this program. I mirrored the part to check the opposite hand (exact mirrored opposite), executed the program offline to make all features nominal, then checked the report. All of my true positions and profiles are OOT .050"-.100". I'm looking into the program now to see if I can find the issue.

          EDIT: I ended up deleting the mirrored program and re mirroring it and it worked this time. I guess I just caught DMIS at a bad moment. The profile is still not liking me though.
