  • Renew sma

I'm using 2018 R2 ( I tried 2019 R1 or R2 and was wonky) and everything is working fine for what I'm doing and don't really see a need to keep up with the SMA. What are your opinions on renewing the Service Maintenance agreement?
    Thanks for the input.

I would go ahead and do it. The cost on your SMA will stack if you dont renew for a year. So essentially you will pay the same but be behind a version for a year.

^^ Agree. We keep up with ours yearly just so we are never behind.

Where I'm at there is no outside work only in house work. and only a couple of product lines. I'm under the impression that once the shoe fits no need to look for a another pair.
We will continue to have Hex. calibrate the CMM but as far as the software updates I'm at the point where I think where good where were at. Is there something I'm not seeing by getting out or staying in?
        Thanks again

you won't have nothing to complain about, if you don't keep it up

well worth keeping up on it, especially if you have a breakdown or need tech support

So there is more to it than just software updates?
After pulling my head out(did you hear the pop!) I get it.

          Your SMA package includes:
          • Access to software updates
          • Preferential technical assistance
          • Free trials of any other Hexagon software
          • Free remote support for software installation and configuration
          • Training seminars for your new software
          • Discounts for additional classroom and online training courses

After looking at the Hexagon site I see that it's not service it's software in SMA. "Software Maintenance agreement"

keep in mind that 'preferential' still means you might expect to get a phone call or video chat within 48 hours and are just as likely to find the answer you need faster right here in forum. Preferential just means they won't want to charge for the support

to me this is the biggest factor, if you let it go and want it later it will cost you. My employer let it lapse and now it is about half the cost of a new machine to just update the SMA... in another 5 years or so I'll start suggesting we just buy a new machine to get the new version of software since the cost should be about the same.

I included a slight exaggeration maybe, but if you let it go for 3 years then want it back you will pay for all 3 years to get it back, a salesman could clarify the cost/benefit details better depending on your exact license it will vary

          This is a tough one.

Quality is overhead. We don't throw chips. That being said, I am always VERY careful of how I spend money.

At a small company like yours with not a lot of cashflow during Covid..it might make sense to NOT renew your SMA. As long as you're OK with not being able to update & no more tech support. I couldn't imagine NOT having an up to date SMA but my boss is loaded.

but the money they waste on other garbage let alone what the cost of a defective part cost - far outweighs the cost of quality

We're actually a essential business and throughout this COVID thing I've only missed 3 day of work. I think quality makes up with build times and happy customers....according to the boss! Great input thanks Dan and everyone

            SOLVED
I just received confirmation letter and installed update to CLM.
Thanks again for the help (input)
