  • Clean probe

We do alot of scanning with the SP25M. Unfortunately dust causes inaccurate readings. The parts are ceramic or carbide and go through a cleaning process before they are placed on the fixture. Im looking for a way to reduce dust in or around the machine. Thanks

To expound on Bob's question, I would make sure the parts were cleaned BEFORE bringing them into the CMM area/room. Then the parts should soak to equalize the temperature of the part.
When in doubt, post code. A second set of eyes might see something you missed.

An air filter on your environmental control and frequent cleaning of your work area would be the cheapest solution. If it is still problematic then there are enclosures availible for CMMs that would be cheaper than building or renting a clean room.

If dust causes a problem then you need to kook at were the machine is and have 2 different doors to get into the area and WJKS.....

Where would I find these enclosures? We have 5 other CMMs without scanning heads I really just need to isolate this one.

Do you have an air vent right over this machine? Sometimes they spew out a lot of junk. Just re-routing the air away from the machine may help in reducing dirt accumulating on the machine.

An air door might help. This is a blower that would mount on the wall above the doorway, outside the cmm room. Anything going in or out of the room would go thru the "curtain" of air which would help to remove dust at that point, before it gets into the cmm room. HTH

Good point. I have four of them spitting carbon from one of our lines into the room.

We have controlled access, double doors to get to the CMM's and our own air conditioning unit/dehumidifier. Unless you spend a ton of money you will never get rid of dust

We may try rigging an airline that contantly runs. Have the probe tip pause in front of this before each piece. That or higher more temps. Basically Im frustrated and just here to vent. Thanks for all the great ideas.

Buy a roll of translucent 4 mil poly and a roll of duct tape. Build yourself 4 walls taped to the ceiling AND the floor. Leave a nice overlap for an operator entry. Hopefully you won't have an air duct in the enclosure.
