  • profile of a lobed shape on top of a cylinder

How do you align to a cylinder to get the profile of a lobed shape on the very top of it? Only about .75" tall and .175 diameter. Trying to get the profile of the shape highlighted in yellow. Cylinder is datum A.

If the cylinder is the only datum, then the feature itself is free to rotate about the datum axis. Level/Origin on the cylinder. Since your lobes appear to be symmetrical, I would take hits on 1/6 of it. Then mirror those hits across so that you now have hits on both sides of 1 of the 3 lobes. Then rotationally pattern 120° 2 more times. This will allow all of the hits to be symmetrical so that best fit will "pull evenly" in every direction. Define the cylinder as datum A and dimension the hits relative to datum A with Xact and you're good to go!
