  • DMIS 2020 high processor usage/running slow

Running DMIS 2020 on a Hexagon provided computer. Intel Xeon E5-1620 3.5GHz processor with a Nvidia Quadro 2000 graphics card and Windows 10 Professional.

I have a bigger part I'm programming (2500 points, 3 cylinders, 3 probes, and probably 20ish tip angles) and as I dimension with Xact measure, the program starts going slower. It takes longer to pull up the dimension windows (Xact and legacy) and select and create the dimensions, longer to scroll through the program, longer to highlight things, everything takes longer. I have my CPU performance monitor open and as I am sitting here typing this with DMIS and the part program open but not doing anything, 8 of my processor cores are being utilized at 50%, 2 are at 25% and 2 are parked. All I have open is DMIS, email, Google Chrome, and out FAI dimensional recording program (Q-Pulse Visual FAIR). Last night I have the computer run CleanUp and it helped but only for about 5 minutes then it all slowed down again. DMIS is the only thing going slower. Internet, email, FAIR, and Excel (used briefly everyday for timecards) run just fine.

Back in 2018 I programmed a big part with 11500 points and 1300 circles and didn't have this issue while having the other above named applications open with no issues on the same computer.

Any ideas on why it starts to slow down?

Try these two steps to see where it leads us -

Disable the Preview Summary Mode, using the Settings Editor, in the Edit Window section
    Set EnableWpfSummaryView to 0

Disable the Home Page, using the Settings Editor, in the Option section
    Set SHowHomePage to False

Don Ruggieri I'll try that later today. Hot part that is already late so I have to get these programs done.

OK Aside from that, here are a couple more things you can try.

Remove the EventModules folder, delete the entire folder itself. -
      C:\Program Files\Hexagon\PC-DMIS 2020 R1 64-bit\EventModules

      Purge the temp folder
      C:\Users\ < user name > \AppData\Local\Temp

With any of these, try one at a time, in the order I've listed them. Let me know if anything works. . . .

I found your crash report. With that alone, we don't have a lot to go on. If it crashes again, can you please collect and compress the crash dump and send it to me?

Purge the contents of the folder named - C:\Users\ <user-name> \AppData\Local\CrashRpt\UnsentCrashReports
Run the software as normal, and if it does crash, Compress that folder and sent it in to me. If it is too big, I can send you a request which will transfer it it in

Will do. It is running one of the big programs now and navigation through the program seems fine. I'll see how it is when it's done.

    1. Do you have Solidworks on the machine?
    2. Does the slowdown only happen after adding dimensions?

rjurca Yes and yes. Solidworks is very seldomly used on my machine. It's been close to 3 months since I last had to use it.

Item 1 - I doubt it is related. When you open file explorer are you using the preview pane. If so, can you turn off the preview pane.
Item 2 - Since this happens with dimensions. I think Don may need to ask our dimension team if they have thoughts

rjurca I do not have the preview pane turned on in file explorer.

The 2nd (bigger) program ran last night and I am analyzing it this morning. It is VERY slow to turn on the CAD graph for profiles and the CAD moves very slow when moving it in the graphics window.

Turn your ARROW DENSITY value down. I was having the same issue. But only when I had the Graphical turned on for either the CAD or Report or Both.

I tried everything you can think of,I have a very powerful computer and it was slow... Mr.Jurca said in another conversation that they saw an issues with how the graphical is rendered. Maybe he remembers and can see where they are at with this issue?

More information on this as I am analyzing this. I have turned my arrow density down to 50 and that helps with moving the CAD around the graphics window. It is still painfully slow to do anything in the edit window. I turn the cadgraph on and change the multiplier and density in the edit window instead of hitting F9 on profile and changing it in the dialogue box. It is slow changing it in the edit window, it seems slower to change it in the dialogue box.

I know this computer would benefit from some upgrades (more memory, SSD, ect) but I would expect it to run faster than this in its current state.

Also with my CPU usage, with the routine open I have 4 cores at 30-40%, 2 at 10%, and 2 parked. When I am doing things (turning cadgraph on and off, changing size/density, manipulating CAD) I get 6 cores at 50% with 2 parked and I've seen all 8 cores spike to 90ish%.

Do you have your graphics card set properly? Drivers updated, system updated (Windows)? Use CC cleaner to clean up your system. How much memory do you have available?

Graphics driver is up to date as is Windows. I used CC Cleaner 2 days ago when this started. Not sure how to tell how much memory is available.

No, you will get fired for sure...bad idea touching any firewall without IT doing it. It is not windows anyway.

Disabling Windows Defender also opens you up to huge risks.

Is there any chance we could get example files that are having the issue? You can use Don or myself as a contact.

Unfortunately I can not. I have discussed this with my boss in the past and it is a hard no go. Proprietary/ITAR.

Couple of thought spring to mind:

            1) Aren't the xactmeasure transparent labels in the GDW a resource hog - can you switch those off and see how it behaves.

            2) As a workaround (not a fix) you can make the GDW render less of the model when you're rotating it (old trick we used to use on low powered PC's) - Rotate options on the Graphics Mode toolbars

Edit: actually just looked (not sure when it changed) but option 2 isn't available on 2018. There are some options in the (such as draw as wire frame or points) which might well help.

NinjaBadger I always have the labels off unless i specifically need to look at those points or that dimension. It really slows down (almost stops) when I turn the cadgraph on and it doesn't matter what the size or density is. I tried turning size and density down to 1 and it was still VERY VERY slow.

A-machine-insp You may have missed it but Benedictj1 asked about graphics card setup. Have you made sure PC-Dmis is using the GPU and not the onboard graphics. I think if you right click on desktop and go to the NVIDIA control panel you can set it in there)

The other thing is you say the PC could do with updating. Now I'm not one of those who think you really need a CAD spec work station, BUT that's quite an old graphics card!

You said it ran bigger programs in 2018 fine but each release of PC-Dmis asks for more and more grunt from the PC, perhaps you are just asking a bit much of the PC?

NinjaBadger I think it could use some upgrading, yes. More RAM and SSD for sure. Not sure what processor temps it's running but water cooling would be nice too. I have a processor stress test on my home PC to test the processor and cooling, I'd be interested to see how this one does.

I did update the graphics card driver after this started happening and that helped ever so slightly. Maybe it's time for me to petition for a new computer. Not gonna lie, I run her hard but she's always kept up. I am pretty much the go to programmer for the bigger and more complex parts so my programs have the most points/features in them and I am the only one here that uses Xact measure and I use it exclusively.
