  • Problem with Probe Error when taking hit

    Hey guys,

I'm using a Renishaw SM25 setup with a TesaStar-M. For some reason, when I'm at A0B0 and want to take a hit in the Y+ direction, my machine errors out and I have to 'machine start' again as in a deflection. Any idea what's going on? This has never happened before. The CMM has been off for the past 4 days. I usually have it up and going every day. Tried to perform a calibration and I get a probe deflection error.

Any thoughts? I'm open to all help. I hope this can be a simple fix vs something unfortunate!

Reset every thing (controller, pc), check if enable button is on, click on twice to reset the probe.

On the jogbox, the button at the top left.
If it's on, click on twice, else 3 times.

I use an SP25, mine is on a Leitz B3C controller. They are very sensitive to the probing parameters. Is there any possibility some parameter changed?

Also, sometimes the magnetic couplings are not properly aligned/attached. Its not always immediately evident. Have you tried removing the module and the puck, and re-attached? or tried other modules or pucks?

Yeah I just took it all apart and noticed the probe body was a bit loose. It's attached to a converter from Tesastar to Renishaw SP25M. Everything is back together and I still get the same problem.

JEFMAN I have a 'probe enable' button. Tried what you said and I still get this issue. Not sure how this happened but it just did. Tried different tips and still, I get the deflection error when taking a hit in the Y+ direction. As a newbie who has done a ton of research to teach myself, and gain great help from others in this forum, it kind of sucks to deal with this just as I finally started 'putting it all together' lol

Maybe the CMM is expecting the probe to be somewhere it is not? Try checking the "reset tips to Theos" button, and also observe the the values in the "probe edit" dialog box. I've seen a bogus prbdv. value make a probe unusable until zero'ed out or reduced to something like .0001

Maybe try rebuilding the probe file if this has not been tried yet?

Very true. Corrupt probe files cause many strange behaviors.

My thoughts at the end of the day yesterday. Haven't rebuilt yet, but I did delete the most recent probe file. I also had a backup from the past summer of the same probe. Loaded that up, same results. I'll try rebuilding today

Okay guys, like I said I'm a bit of a newbie, so with this issue going on I started to dig into the details of my Tesastar e Interface and my Renishaw PI200 Probe Interface for clues. I've noticed that yesterday the 'Damped' LED was lit on both. All in all, looks like I need to either reset or get the probe out of this 'Damped Mode'. Anyone got any experience or ideas with that?

Thanks for the help so far guys!

Hey JEFMAN I saw an old post of yours where you said that you unplugged the cables out of the side of your Tesastar M, replugged and things started workiing. I'm debating on doing the same. I have that same build. The converter or adapter seems a little wacky to me. right?

The converter Tesa to Renishaw ?
It's not easy to set up, but once it's done, there's no problem...

                Good afternoon everyone!

Got an update on the situation. First off, I just want to express how thankful I am to have this type of resource for support. You guys jumping in to help whenever I post a problem is heavily appreciated. I couldn't thank y'all enough!

So, i need a new SM25 Module. I was able to borrow another one to try out, and the calibration went through fully! Before, I couldn't take a Y+ hit, or a hit at A0B0 on the top-to the right of the sphere (2nd hit in calibration if that didn't make sense).

All in all, I love my CMM again and I can't wait to get the new Module in and continue my growth. On the bright side, this possibly solves a lot of questions I had related to accuracy and repeatability.

Just wanted to remember to update the post and thank you guys. After looking through the forums and sometimes finding posts without updates on the situation, I will try to make sure to update all of mine for the other beginning CMM Programmer's like myself!

Hope this thread helps someone else. Thanks guys.
