I tried the iterative alignment and could not get it to work. I ended up getting it to work using a best fit 3d vector least square with no weights.

How did the iterative not work (no joke here)? I haven't run across a part yet where an iterative wouldn't get the job done.
Can you post a pic of the part or a general sketch (in case of ITAR or proprietary)?
I'm not doubting you at all. On the contrary, I'm just wondering why it didn't work in case I run into a similar part.
