  • Steel Pointer Tip

    Hi All,
I am trying to calibrate a steel pointer tip and I get an error on the diameter. The software notes 0 as a diameter, when I measure my calibration sphere, I get .275mm while the SD is .007. Does the diameter make a difference? I am trying to measure the depth of a few thin lines cut into a steel plate. I do not have a .5mm styli, plus when I did have a few, they break very easy. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

If all you are trying do is verify the depth, you don't technically need to calibrate the tip because you are using the same point (direct measurment) on the probe for all your measurements.

You're assuming a 2 point distance, both points taken by the same sensor, for a depth?

      Yes I was.

The 2 'pointed' probes offered by Renishaw actually have a 0.06mm flat on the end, so you will never get a 0 diameter reading when calibrating one.
