  • Deviation with off-line programming?

    I’m programming offline to a model. Occasionally I see deviation in the CMM report of a feature. When I go back and look at the points, I sometimes see a difference between THEO’s and ACTL’s.

    I right click them and pick “Reset measured values to nominal” refresh the feature and refresh the dimensions and they read correct.

    What’s causing the deviation?

    Without seeing your code, check to see that your alignments lock all 6 degrees of freedom. That can cause your nominals to get messed up

      I’m doing iterative alignments. Generally, level to 4 points, rotate to 2, origin 1 point. My nominals aren’t messed up; my actuals shown deviation.

        well, iterative alignments re-solve when you re-open a program, even when you do not run them. I would guess this is the issue. all the rounding issues when going from 12-place cad data to 3 (or 4 or 5) place program values.

          It might have to do with your iterative..

          You only need THREE hits to level, two to rotate, and one to origin. Adding additional "leveling" hits induces "fixture error" and could be messing with your nominals.

          Something alignment related is going on here...if your alignments are correct & so is your CAD model then everything should always be zero/nominal when you run offline.. :-/

              I can’t show the CAD. But if you look at the attached (maybe) PDF report it shows SF2 with .001 deviation. Surface 2 is the B datum. It is a plane constructed out of PNT5,PNT6,PNT9. PNT5 &6 are my 2 points of rotation for my alignment. PNT 9 is the 3rd point in a plane constructed after the alignment. PNT9 shows deviation.

              SF1 is the A datum. It’s a non-planer surface that I have constructed a plane out of with PNT2,3 &4. I also level to those 3 points. SF2 and SF3 (B&C) are planer surfaces constructed with 3 points.

              Surfaces 15, 16 & 17 all showed .001 deviation. None of the hits show deviation, so I switched to 4 places. Still no deviation on the points.

              This example doesn’t have much deviation, but in some of these I see as much as .006. Until I reset the actuals to nominal.

              I'll try to post it next....

              EDIT: Okay, I had to cut a whole bunch of stuff out to get this to post.... but the problem areas are there.

                            For the “A” because I need a datum surface and I have never had good luck using a constructed feature set as a datum. The B & C because they are planes.
