  • Renishaw or Wolf&Beck OTP6-M (Optical Trigger Probe)

Does anybody use one of these with PC-DMIS? To make a long story as short as possible, we aquired a Merlin machine from one of our closed facilities about 6 months ago running Virtual Dmis. We are now in the process of converting it over to PC-DMIS V3.7Mr2. The machine has a PH9 head and we have only used TP20 probes with the machine up to this point. We found a box containing the OPT6-M probe (of course no manual or instructions) but as far as we here know, the OTP6-M probe has never been used on the machine (and of course there is nobody around to answer that question since the plant was shut down). None of the programs we ran across in Virtual Dmis used the probe. The upgrade of the machine should be complete today, but I have several questions as to how the OTP6-M will work on the machine. I downloaded the manual from Renishaw covering the probe, but it does not appear to be all that useful. It mentions that a 25.4mm ball should be used to calibrate the probe. Can we use the same Renishaw ball that we use to calibrate touch-trigger probes? Basically any information you may know about the OPT6-M would be very useful to me...

    Thanks in advance!

As far as I know, the optical probes require a non-reflective tool for calibration. You should be able to call Renishaw and get some answers if you can't get them here.

      Thanks Matt...

I didn't think it would calibrate to a reflective surface either. Once B&S is done lasering the machine, calling Renishaw will be my next step...

The file contained in the zip file (attached) helps a little bit, but I guess every little bit counts...

Is their anyone on this forum that actually uses an optical probe???
