I have a part that just got a major update, I was wondering if it is possible to replace the existing model with the new one. Or am I better off just re-writing the program?

As long as the cad origins are the same you can simply do the FILE ==> IMPORT ==> SELECT YOUR CAD MODEL ==> and choose REPLACE MODEL when prompted. I do that quite often with our designers making changes on a weekly basis.
