  • Bad to have programs running in background?

    Hello everyone,

This subject came up ther other day when were having a dmis problem.
Someone suggested that having other programs running in the background could acually cause problems while running/programming pc-dmis. The program that was running windows media player that was playing mp3 audio from the C drive.

    Thanks

Well there is no doubt it can have an effect. If your system is border line inadequate, or if you are using large cad files you may not be able to have anything running. I am at home now, so I can't give you all of my machine's specs, but it was pretty much top of the line about 2 years ago. I run all kinds of stuff, sometimes even AutoCad, at the same time as pc-dmis. But I almost never have CAD files in pc-dmis. There are definitely times that I can tell the background programs are slowing pc-dmis down. So you can run other stuff, but if you are having problems you should only have pc-dmis open, and it may be time to consider a computer upgrade. HTH

What Wes said. I run Solidworks at times while running DMIS and/or excel and/or word and/or adobe pdf writer and/or music and/or internet ****(jk). It depends on your system.

I have no problem running other software while running the demon. The P.C. we are using is running on 2GB of ram and the only thing slowing it down is our network.

I have very little if any problems with running 2 copies of Mozilla (like IE) and watch online video while programs are running It does slow down sometimes when I get to many things open. I do not use cad often tho

I may have DMIS, UniGraphics & Autocad all running at the same time. My system was also pretty much top shelf stuff two years back. I have noticed that I will have graphics that are slow and clunky at times with big CAD files.

I run the following at a minimum:

              Pcdmis
WMP doing WMA fiels from the hard drive
              Outlook Express
              Excel

Sometimes I also have running (in addition to the above)
              Cadkey
              Surfcam
              MS Word
UG (and that is really uuugggg!)
              IE6

So, depending on the system, you can really crank the number of applications up, some systems won't handle it.

              WINDOZE 2000
              1.5 gb ram
              80 gb hard drive
              AMD XP2100+ cpu

If you are having problem running PCDMIS while listening to music, watching a Shakira video, downloading Simpsons episodes, playing solitare, and running an online gambling ticker while checking the weather forecast in Egypt I'd recomend shutting PCDMIS down. No sense in bogging your system down with unecessary resources.

I don't have any problem running other programs while pc-dmis is running. But if another application is opened while a part is being measured, the pc-dmis toolbar gets scrambled.
Running Win 2k on one system and XP on another. Same result both machines.

Do you minimize Pcdmis when you open these other applications? That is the only time I get scrambled bars in Pcdmis, only when it is minimized, that's why I have the quick-click start bar set up at the bottom of the screen, above the task bar.

Matt; Yes pc-dmis is minimized to open other apps. I'll try your method.

prog's that "stream" data like an mp3 file player should access a different drive to avoid the read/write collision on the C: drive........move the music to another physical drive and it should work better.

                              Hey all,
The computer here is equipped with:

                              Windows XP Pro
                              Pentium 4 CPU 3.0 GHz
                              504 MB RAM

Looks like it probably use some more RAM?
