  • Scanning Polygons....Again

Help....I need to take a 360 hit scan of internal and external polygons and report the conditions graphicaly.Am having problems writing the program and reporting dimensions.

    1. Put the origin at the nominal location of the polygon.
    2. Figure out the nominal location of a 1 wall.
    3. take a 2 pnt line on the wall and adjust nominals, vectors to correct locations.
    4. If this was a 6 sided polygon, change the number of hits from 2 to 60, and answer yes to equally spacing the hits.
    5. edit the pattern pasting to 60 degrees for 6 sided polygon. 5 times to rotate.
    6. copy the original line that you updated to 60 hits
    7. edit – paste with pattern.
    8. now you will have 6 lines with 60 hits each.
    9. create a feature set from the 6 lines.
    10. insert a profile dimension for the feature set based on the tolerance that you need.
    11. insert an analysis view for the profile dimension.

        Boomer,
This is a 3 sided poly with 120 deg radius

Is there any way you can put in a picture so I know exactly what it looks like? Sounds like a triangle....

Yes could be better defined as a triangle but, with (3) 120 deg radii

Rather than take a 2 pnt line, take a 3 pnt circle on one of the radii, change nominals, then change number of hits from 3 to 120...paste with pattern...ect..(prev. post)

Is this the polygon on the shaft interface of air compressor impellor?
Scan as unknown closed shape and compare to CAD - allow bestfit in rotation about centerline and 2 axis translation only.

He doesnt have a model to use...I tried having him use a linear closed scan...but without a model to compare it to it does you no good.

OK, I guess I didnt get that from your posts.

He will HAVE to get at least a 2d profile from a CAD system. The polygons that I have seen usually dont have flat sides, they are radiused. If they are flats, then I guess you could measure the normally but the datuming will be very important.

I have not seen how the datum is supposed to be setup. Is it to the theoretical corners, Max Inscribed circle inside the lines....or what?

IF he has to report it "graphically" then he still has to get a CAD file or make one, regardless of anything.

These are not flat sides but, radiused instead.
