Zeiss makes a good rugged machine, inspectors here crash the machines at least once a week. Calypso is like any software, they all have bugs. At least thats what i was told. I never used Calypso, but a friend of mine does.
Actually, I have found the B & S machines much more rugged than the Zeiss. The scales on the Panzers are facing up, and subject to collect all sorts of debris. I only envy the automatic retract during manual probing. Plus, your first encounter with the floating air bed is alarming.
I mostly work on a B & S 7-10-7 machine. The floor inspectors use the Zeiss
machines. They just load a part on a holding fixture and punch in the program number. But they still manage to find away to crash the machines. It doesn't matter how much training you give them they still crash the head. If i was to buy a new machine it would be a B & S .
I spent 3.5 years running Calypso and it is good software. Easy to learn and it is also very good with high level programming. The only thing that I didn't like about the software was the base alignment measuring sequence but learned to get around that by cheating the software a bit. I ran V2.3.42 and they are up to V4.XX now and I hear that it runs very well.
The machine I had was an Eclipse 4040 made in '90 and refurbished in '99 (scales, controller, PC and software). The only issue I have with Zeiss is the cost of service, both repair and calibration. The service itself was top rate and very decent on response time and the servise people (reps and techs) went out of their way to make me happy.
we have 2 zeiss mc850 w/rotary tables in our metrology lab. we run an older software= umess300. great software. we don't program off cad models on these machines. program parts to print in the "learn" or "teach" mode.
