  • Recomended Specs for PC for PC-DMIS?

    Hi guys,
I'm curious about the recomded specs to run PC-Dmis. We currently have Windows 2000 SP 4, Pentium 4 - 2.4GHZ proc, GFeForce4 Ti 4200 128MB AGP 4x, and Direct x 9.0 or Better.
Reason I'm asking is that we are experiencing some crashing lately. We try deleting a line say, and you get the PC-Dmis has generated an error and will be shut down message. This occurs in no particular order or always with the same keystroke/combination. I was asked to find out if it may be a system requirement issue.

We are currently running Version 3.5 MR1

    Thanks in advance.

Your problem is most likely not your computer, your system specs look fine to me, but your software is highly suspect. You should upgrade to 3.5MR2, (at least), or 3.7MR3, (preferable). 3.5MR2 will still shut down at random a few times a week. With 3.7MR3 I have had very few shutdowns, 1 a month or less. It is my opinion, and seems to be the general consensus, that 3.7MR3 is the most stable version since 3.2XXX. The shutdowns you describe sound like a well documented habit of 3.5 & 3.5MR1, they are often euphemistically refered to as "enhancements" by those who are tired of saying "bugs". If you are limited by an understandable unwillingness to cough up SMA $$$$.$$, I can understand and would recommend reverting to 3.2XXX. HTH

I would fix your specs for PCDMIS and not the specs for your PC
I used to be high on life but I built up a tolerance.

BEFORE you delete the lines of the program, do a DOUBLE <CTRL>-S save of the program. V3.5 had this problem and the double key-stroke save usually kept it from crashing. Also, you will have fewer crashes if you use the EDIT drop-down instead the keyboard DELETE. Why, I have no idea, it was just one of the LOVELY aspects of V3.5

            Thanks for the information guys.

Yes Matt we have gotten into the habit of saving before we delete any lines. I will try edit drop down menu as well see if that helps prevent crashes.

We presented this post to management and have now been asked to look into updating our SMA. Wish me luck.

            Thanks again guys.

No, not just a SINGLE save, but do it twice in a row, BANG BANG, seems to make a difference. I had a LOT LESS crashes when doing the double save-save before the delete then when doing just one. In fact, I got into the habit so DEEPLY that It has become second nature to do double CTRL-S save with ALL the software I use before I delete.

                3.5 Mr1

I agree with Wes, I remember 3.5 MR1 crashing all the time...I believe I was told that it was worse than the original 3.5 release....If you cant goto 3.7 MR3, I would hope that you can go to 3.5 MR2.

Ok, I'll give that double save a shot. I'm hoping this pans out for the upgrade, because going I backwards to 3.2 would be a pain. I am most concerned about backwards compatibility in my exsisting programs.

Well there can be forward compatibility issues too. You will not want to use a virtual condition applied to a datum for true position in 3.7MR3. There have been several discussions of this. If you have been checking the "use datums" box and selecting datums as well as features, once you upgrade the software you will need to make sure you are properly algined to the datums, uncheck the box, and only select the feature in the trueposition window. If you use the datums in the window you will get bad answers. If you have a lot of programs written in 3.2XXX you may have to rewrite some or all of them entirely in 3.7MR3. 3.7 does have some nice addtional features, depending on what type of work you do. I find the ability to see individual hits and being able to drag and drop those individual hits worth the upgrade difficulties, you may not. HTH
