  • Changing PC's

    Good Morning to All,

I was just wanting to know if there is any major problems when doing a PC upgrade. We need to upgrade our PC to a faster one with more memory. Has anyone had any problems or is it an easy swap.

    Thx,
    Steve

Your biggest problem "or mine was" getting all the settings back to where I had them. Do a walk throught of every setting you can find and record it so you can put it back into your program. Otherwise it was pretty straight forward.

You can save or export registry settings, throw it on a floppy and import to the new computer. You can also save a copy of each persons screen setups by just copying the persons folder created where DMIS resides on your computer and then reinstal on the new one.

BE AFRAID, BE VERY AFRAID (Gena Davis, 'The Fly').

Depending on the controller you have, you may have to move a LOT of different file and/or directories to the NEW pc.

You best bet, if you can get the IT to buy into it is to keep the old hard drive and put it in the new PC as a second drive, after windoze has been set up and is running. Then, simply re-install the version(s) of Pcdmis into the old drive locations (IE: install to D:\PcdmisV3500 if on the old PC is was C:\Pcdmisv3500). By re-installing into the 'existing' directories, Pcdmis SHOULD (and that is only SHOULD) pickup all the old files and directories you were using and will add it to the registry of the new PC OS.

In any case, BACKUP THE ENTIRE HARD DRIVE IF POSSIBLE FIRST!!!!!!! before changing (or moving) it to the new PC. If you are under the SMA, CALL B&S and have them walk you through EVERY STEP so you KNOW you are stil using the table map for the machine (otherwise, you will NOT be calibrated!).

When Reloading Pc-dmis You Need To Save The Following Files:

          Comp.dat
          Down.load
          Tool.dat
          Programs
          Probe Files

That can not be stated with enough emphasis! Make sure you have a backup of everthing!

Now, some people are still using OTHER controllers than B&S controllers. Some of those people also need to have the OLD software as well as Pcdmis on the hard drive, and in the correct place, in order for Pcdmis to find and use the table map, and I have no idea WHAT controllers will require this or what files. This subject if VERY touchy. You might even want to wait until JUST BEFORE your annual machine calibration to do this, so that if anything is missed or forgotten and just plain messed up, you can at least make sure your machine is still calibrated.
