  • Retrofit

    Hi All,
I was just wondering if anyone has had a Dea CMM retrofitted from PC-DMIS TO CALYPSO.
The company that I work for is considering retrofitting the machine I use which is a Large Dea Gantry Delta from PC-Dmis to Calypso..
This is not my idea but from someone above me who wants to standardize all the CMM's in the plant, right now all the CMM's with Calypso are Zeiss machines which is there OEM software . I like PC-Dmis and I believe is not in there best interest but I would like to hear anybody's thought on this..
    Thanks

    Brian,
I think you're on the right track by wanting to stay away from this "retrofit". Who do the higher ups think is going to support this beast? Zeiss, DEA, Wilcox, Hexagon??????? We've been mucking around with an LK machine retrofitted with Collapso for a year now. It still doesn't work right.
When you get into problems with a machine like this, what tends to happen in my experience, is the software guys blame the *** **** and vice versa so nothing gets fixed in a timely manner if at all.

I AGREE. Unless you want a machine that is down a month or two out of each year, I would avoid that retrofit all together...

Really, whay take a machine out of its native software? I may be wrong, but while other software may have more toys, PC-Dmis has a very user and requester comfortable result. Is this to match a software someone else has? If so, the next battle will be what we have. Our customer has the PC-Dmis now as well. Now that our softwares match, we haggle about who's programs are correct. Half them, half us.....

While it would be nice to just pull in a program & run it, we as programmers are always tasked with making sure they are "right" anyhow. Making a new program shouldn't hurt.

            Doug,
I’m the individual that Brian referenced in his article relative to retrofitting our Dea Gantry to calypso. We have been successful with retrofitting existing Zeiss machines from UMESS to Calypso with a VAST scanning system and the Dea Gantry will be the first none Zeiss upgrade. You mentioned that you (or your company) have “been mucking around with an LK machine retrofitted with Collapso for a year now.” and that “It still doesn't work right.” Can you tell me what model LK that you retrofitted? Can you also tell me what problems that you have encountered? I’m somewhat concerned, as I contacted Zeiss and they indicated that “to the best of their knowledge”, they’re not aware and have no record of retrofitting an LK machine. Can you elaborate?

I see another thread has been revived. From the standpoint of support I would not worry about it. B&S/Hexagon will not provide support even if it is their machine so what do you have to lose? Worst case scenario is Zeiss won't either. Chances are Zeiss won't heckle, provoke and blame you the way Hexagon does though. What does the SMA cost for a seat of Calypso and what is your experience with tech support? B&S has telephonic tech support that is unreachable and does not call you back. When they do communicate to customers they lie, insinuate that you do not deserve support, blame you for the problems you are having and all around take a dump on you (as we have seen of late). Why would anyone try to talk you out of getting away from that? I hope migrating to Calypso works out well for you and that you find your future purchases to not be from under the Will-cocks umbrella.
