  • Controller Problem

Not necessarily a PC-DMIS issue but...

Sometimes during execution if I cancel just as it is taking a hit (light goes out on head and stays out) my controller will "lock up" and not let me move the thing around manually or under dcc. I have a TP20 and if I remove the module and put an empty module (module seated light should be on) on the probe the light still stays out.

Usually when this happens I shut everything down and re-start and all is good. Occasionally, when I try to re-start the controller won't turn on. No light on the head, no lights on the front of the controller.

Anyone else have this problem? Anyone got any suggestions?

I have a PHC10-2 controller by the way.

Oh, and anyone else have problems only on fridays?

Well, what type of CMM controller do you have?

With the SHARPE32 controller, you can hit the RUN/HOLD button (makes the light go out) then hit it again, but HOLD IT DOWN and you can then manually move the machine, USING the joystick (so you will also have to hold down the enable button) to get it off a 'dead-contact'.

This is why I replace the module with a tip with one that is empty. That should bring everything back. It doesn't. I think the solution to that problem is to remember not to cancel an execution when it is about to take a hit. I can live with that.

What I can't live with is that the controller won't turn back on after I shut down! I checked the fuse in the back. It is good.

When in a car, heading for a crash, many people curl up into a seated fetal position to hide themselves from it rather than enjoy the impact. I see that this may relate here...

I think you are talking about the Renishaw controller? I have a two of these PHC10-2. I'm using Sheffield CMMs though. I do not have this problem. I do however have problems when an error hit occurs and pressing continue, it will lock up. But I think this is more a PCDEMON problem.

I am indeed talking about the Renishaw controller. I called tech support about 2 hours ago. Still no call back. This is definitely a hardware problem as I usually have the lights come on without starting the computer.

For those of you who may be wondering...

I got tired of waiting on tech support and started doing some investigation with the help of our local EE. It turns out that the power switch on the Renishaw PHC10-2 head controller was shot. Hopefully that is the only problem. I've got a new one arriving tomorrow morning for the budget breaking price of $22 plus shipping.

                    Ok, final update for this...

I recieved the switch this morning from Mouser Electronics and installed it. We are back up and running fine.
