  • HELP..."TR_FG007, Yaxis chip rate error"

We had some power surges (found out later) last week, and upon finding out our transformer was faulting, we had a planned power outage on Tuesday for 2 hours.
After trying to power back up, we continued to have a problem....the machine start button will not power up.
We had our maintainance in and thought that the problem was the probe head controller box, ordered a new one and that wasn't it......
We thought the problem was the relay box that feeds into the probe head controller box, ordered a new one and that wasn't it......
Because this is not a software issue, but a machine issue, and we do not have a machine contract, we cannot get brown and sharpe to even give us 5 minutes of phone time to try to diagnose the problem.

PLEASE HELP....we have been down for 2 days, and I got everyone screaming for resolution....does anyone know what this might be???????

PS.....201210 chameleon, ph10mq indexing head, sp600 probe head, sharp 32 controller, pcdmis 3.5 (no mr's)

I think I remember a similar thread not long ago, but was x axis, you might search. I seem to remember they had to have a new encoder to solve the problem. HTH

      Where are you from?

I don't have a contract anymore with Browne and Sharpe. They should come for the money. Where are you located? The Browne and Sharpe guys from the South would probably help you out. Of course, They would want to fix it.

Chip rate errors are going to be related to:

        Scales, readers, and controller.

It will not be in the head control. You may have fried the scale reader, I doubt the scale itself went bad, or you might have a problem in the machine controller.

If you have the SMA, I would start a calling spree. Keep calling them every 10 or 15 minutes. Every other machine mafg. of the machines in THIS shop will at least give us 'things to look at' when there are problems. We bought a WEDM 10 years ago from Charmilles and we can stil get answers from them when the random problem pops up. If those morons at B&S won't even talk to you, then that is a VERY sad thing indeed. Maybe you need to call someone else, not TECH support, but at the 'hardware' division. Or, call a salesman, like at the Wixom offices (if they are still there).

Wes is right there was a thread do a search. Start cheap and clean your scale maybe even the face of the encoder depending on the set up, be carefull when grabbing the elecronic components that you don't short anything or you'll be in for big bucks (just make sure the e-stop is down). You may be able to replace the encoder yourself, they are cheap.

This may not solve your problem, but worth a try. Did you clean the Y-scale? very often, some dirt or debris will trigger a chip rate error.
Wipe the scale gently with a cotton swab soaked with alcohol and re-initialize the controller. Make sure the encoder is properly seated while you're down there cleaning. If the problem persists, you may need a new encoder.

Thanks to all for quick responses, we did clean, but pretty sure its not the encoders--but the controller
We have thus far switched the Y axis and X axis cables and then the machine will start up, but of course it thinks the two are switched--but this leads me to believe that something is fried within the Y axis board or cable......
Faxed the sheet back to brown and sharpe for a service call 3 hours ago and still no response...........

Several years back, I had this problem on an Excel 7-10-7. I found the power supply to be the culprit. Your electrician should be able to check this out for you. In my case I was able to replace the bridge rectifier in that circuit for a few bucks. Might be worth a look see

                  Good luck, gal!

It turned out to be the Y axis encoder, the brown and sharpe technician couldn't explain why we were able to get the machine to start by switching the cables...one of those strange things.
I did end up calling my sales rep, and in the end, I was plesantly suprised that we were able to get not only a technician, but our regular calibration guy in here the same day! Hats off to B&S for the quick response, and problem resolution.
                    Thanks all for the help!
