  • How many hits when you calibrate your probe tips?

On one of our probe tips, we just went from 7 articulations to 27 articulations, with the additional 20 almost never being used. Previously, we took something like 10-12 hits on the calibration sphere on two levels, and although it might have been overkill, on 7 articulations who really cares, it doesn't take that much time. But 27 is a horse of a different color.

What do you guys think is necessary? How many hits do you take?

I always use 9 hits. I've tried more, and less, and haven't seen much of a difference.

I use 5 hits, have forever, even before Pcdmis even existed. I did notice that 4 is an option (4-5 in the poll). 4 is just about the WORST number of hits you can use. 4 hits ALWAYS makes a perfect sphere, no 'out of roundness', which is used to calculate the SD when calibrating. So, 4 hits, perfect sphere, perfect SD. If it is out-of-round, you need to know that (mis-hit, dirt, etc.) so you need to use at least 5 hits, one more then the minimum to make a sphere.

13 hits @ 3 levels, was told by B & S to use an odd number of hits, their math works better with an odd number.

9 on 3 levels. Anything else above that just seems like a waste of time , which of course I never do !
