Why isn't this button active on the tool bar? Is specific to a scanning type probe or something?

You guys are a huge help and the biggest reason why I'm succeeding at this right now.
I had my cursor or something in the wrong place. The thing that threw me of was that all of the other auto features were available except for that single one. While I was waiting for the expertise to come pouring in I worked forward and all of the sudden it was lit up. I don't know why it would be the only one unavailable???
