    Default Surface profile with datums

    hey all,

i have a surface profile i have to measure, its relative to a b and c. unfortunately the only decent place to locate the part on is one of the datums. There for I can't measure the datum to define it... using
    Code:
    DATDEF/DAT_C,C
I can measure datums A and B and define them.

When i output the report it shifts the Z b/c it is not "constrained" by any datum.

what would be the best way to go about this reporting to the correct z position relative to the datums?

thanks in advance for the help

You are supporting the part on one of the datums...can you probe the surface that the part is supported with?

hey thanks for getting back to me,
    been really busy!

not while the part is loaded.
The datum I can't hit is located at 0,0,0. i level and translate my z axis to this in a fixture alignment
    if i did this
    Code:
    F1         =GENERIC/PLANE,DEPENDENT,CARTESIAN,$
                NOM/XYZ,<0,0,0>,$
                MEAS/XYZ,<0,0,0>,$
                NOM/IJK,<0,0,1>,$
                MEAS/IJK,<0,0,1>
    DATDEF/F1,C
    Would this be legal?

If the surface you are leveling to is normal to and contacting the datum, then yes, perfectly legal.
I do the same thing quite often.
In fact, probing a simulated datum like that is in some ways better practice than probing the actual datum surface.

If that's stable surface you could measure it before you place part on it
