Could someone please tell me how is the best way to check the TIR on a tube appx. 4" OD X 30" lg. There is a conflict between indicator -vs- cmm ( Romer arm) eng. -vs- QA.

Thank You
JW

Believe what the Indicator says, a CMM cant check "Total" runout.

The indicator is about 10,000 times better than that romer arm. You are VERY lucky if you can get correct values within 0.002" on that, more like 0.005" depending on the setup, etc.,

It's old (QUIT FISHING!). I reported THIS reply-spammer quite a few times when they (there were SEVERAL) popped up. You can see it did a lot of good.

An indicator will tell you part of the story but not the whole story. An indicator in one spot will give you circular runout. Sounds like you want Total runout which is all of the surface. This will include all of the roundness, straightness, offset of the axis and also the taper which you will probably not pick up unless you mike both end and check for taper. Very hard to check on a long part. Good luck.
