Hello folks,
I'm preparing to program a series of parts that are dimensioned almost exclusively with basic dimensions and profiles. This is not a problem. What I'm unsure of is the General Tolerance callout being a profile to surface.
We have never had parts dimensioned in this manner. How should this be intrepreted?
Thanks

Is this a "Cat" print?

If you are refering to Caterpillar, no but it is an automotive part.

When I worked for a company making cast parts for Chrysler they would have us set up to the datums and just coat the part in profile points. We would just report each point with ± half the profile. This covered shape and stock. It was rare that they would ask for any linear dimensions.

As DADDYBLUTO stated that's what we do also.

That is how I was thinking but it is always reassuring to get the opinion of the Big Dog Experts on this board.

Automotive stampings here. You might want to ask if there is any number max/min to meet their requirements. Usually we've been able to get by with several points reporting the surface features (forms), maybe a bridge across a couple cross sections. Trims or profile, everybody has seemed to be happy with 25 to 50mm spacing.
